Americans assume that today's society is in good shape. Even though, there is a Economic slump people are content because they have jobs, and all of their belongings are place. Members of our society have no clue what is going on around them. This week I learned a few fascinating pieces of information that I believe should be shared.
Firstly, Law makers are trying to enact a bill so that when people take pictures with there cell phone there has to be shutter sound so that others can know that there picture is being taken. How preposterous is this? They say that this is to cut down on people who are taking inappropriate pictures. I am for certain that enacting this law is not going to cut down on people taking pictures when they are not suppose to.
In addition, to that particular law being passed the victims of Katrina are still at war with finding a place to lay their head. Due to our "wonderful and thriving" economy the public housing projects that needed to be built for the victims can not be built because of funding issues. "New Orleans is frighteningly close to another calamity, but this time, it’s not the result of a breached levee or corrupt politics. This potential disaster has to do with the economy: Without a recovery of the credit market, the city could be unable to complete the redevelopment of four desperately-needed public housing projects torn down after Hurricane Katrina. "
The victims of Katrina have displaced for three years, and they would like a home to go to. Our federal government is bailing out car companies, but to give people a home seems to be difficult. The people in New Orleans can only hope that perhaps the economic stimulus package can help them get on their feet.
Lastly, Obama requested 200 million dollars for the national mall to have it renovated. I voted for Obama personally and when I saw that request disappointment set in. Along with that request he asked for 30 million for the roads in our country. So the roads we drive on is not as important as the mall we shop in. The Jefferson monument is close by the mall and that needs renovation, and nothing has been brought up about that.
America needs help, bu it seems like everyone has their own agenda. How is the mall more important than roads? Why are victims from a natural disaster still misplaced. In order to correct these problems there needs to be a collective effort from government officials and the community or else we will be in this situation for a long time.

Are these amounts for the mall and roads part of Obama’s stimulus package? Is he using the renovations as a reason to create jobs? If that is the case it may be less important which one costs more. It may take more workers to renovate the mall. We definitely need more information. I don’t know the answers to my questions. I am hoping you do.
ReplyDeleteI want to ask if you have an idea on how the community can assist the victims of Katrina? I am in Florida like you. If I were closer I would definitely volunteer my time. Are you talking about community assistance with funding? I personally am strapped to the bone. I have no extra money. I am not exaggerating, and I don’t mean I am strapped because I am paying for a luxurious lifestyle. I don’t know how many others are in my position but I know there are others who could pitch in funds. Just today I happen to hear this DJ on the radio talking about how he had his own private Gym that he doesn’t even use. I was think that if people with this amount of money (like superstar actors, etc) would maybe take the amount of money they would pay a maid and send it to people like the Katrina victims how much good that could do.
I agree! The priorities of many "higher ups" in this country are flawed. I'm not singling any one person out, because many share the same selfish concerns. Hurricane Katrina was enough for those people to suffer through; now they don't even have housing? I am shocked and appalled to hear this news. Sadly, all I can do is pray that the government finally resolves the issue.
ReplyDeleteObama is already becoming a disappointment to many it seems. His "pork ridden" economic package is ridiculed, he requests more money for a mall than the state of public works and roads, and is doing nothing new for the still displaced Katrina victims. He has inspired a book about how "bottom up" economics is going to replace "outdated trickle down" economics to revitalize the economy. If we give massive amounts of money to low wage individuals, do we really think that will stimulate the economy by being spent on viable products, services, and support systems? Or will there be a lot more junk bought at Walmart?
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to really comment on this without knowing all the facts myself. Sadly I don't think that any of us know the facts. Perhaps the Mall of America renovation will be a good idea, and jobs will be created, and a nicer mall will be made. This would then I assume give the economy a boost on a local level around the mall. On the other hand though it does seem a bit crazy to think that we really need 200 million dollars to renovate the mall. Especially considering all of the other issues we have in America. I wish I didn't feel this way, but in the end it seems to me that when it comes to politics knowbody really knows the truth, and all of us are getting screwed.
